Scripture: Luke 13:
1Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."
Observation: When bad things happen to us we sometimes ask God, “What did I do to deserve this?” but those things that we are facing are not punishments from God, it is just part of life.
Application: Some of the first century religious folks had the idea that all things happened as a result of either blessings or curses. If you were pious and holy, if you were fair and honest then God will bless you and protect you and never let anything bad happen to you. If however you were negligent in your religious duties, if you failed to make proper sacrifice for your household then bad things would come as a result.
In this scripture Jesus is trying to teach that bad things happen to people regardless of what kind of lives they live. You may be the most moral and upright person in your town and still face terrible hardships. This is just a result of the chaotic world that we live in.
This is a reality that we must face. While in this world bad things are sure to happen and we will not be able to avoid going through some of them. But if we don’t repent and come to God then the things that we see shadowed in physical reality are sure to come upon us in the spiritual. “But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
Prayer: Father God,
Please help me to understand that the difficult things which I must face in this world are not punishment from you but rather are symptoms of living. Help me to cling to you for protection and forgiveness. Walk with me through the hard times and carry me when I am at my weakest moments. Keep me firmly planted in your grace and help me to understand your love.
