Scripture: Luke 6:
20Looking at his disciples, he said:
"Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
22Blessed are you when men hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
Observation: What many thought to be signs of God’s blessings was really only signs of conforming to man’s ideas.
Application: Jesus often said and did things that went against the grain of the religious people of his day. These words that he speaks to his disciples sound so good an right to us because they are what we have been taught all of our lives. We understand that Jesus is saying, the material is not the important part of life, what really matters is the spiritual. But for the good church going people of the first century this was a very new teaching. It was hard for them to accept because they had long held to the idea that material wealth, plenty of food, happiness and being accepted were signs that a person was in good with God and that He was blessing them accordingly.
Jesus said, it’s not like that, don’t look at how good a person seems to be doing in this life, look instead at how mature they have become in their soul. Real growth and understanding of the spiritual is often born from the pain and struggles we have in this world. Job, although a good and faithful person before his great trials grew through his own suffering and so do we.
I don’t know what you’re facing in your life right now. But whatever it is, you should understand that God is working in your life to move you to a place of greater understanding and closer fellowship with Him in the spiritual realm. Don’t worry if people don’t understand you or accept you because you don’t fit into the mold that society would put you in. You are in good company, Jesus didn’t fit into those molds either, and a big reason why he was being constantly pursued by the powers of the day was because they couldn’t make him conform to their expectations.
You are who you are because God wants you to be YOU. You don’t have to apologize to anyone because you aren’t who they think you should be. Be true to yourself, show forth love to others, and know that God is with you.
Prayer: Father God,
Thank you for making me who I am, and for loving me as I am. Help me to serve you in all that I do and to bring glory to you throughout my whole life.
