Free Indeed

Scripture: John 8:

34Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

John 7,8 – Passage Lookup – New International Version – BibleGateway.com

Observation: We can live a life that is free.

Application: Free from sin.  Is there such a person who is truly free from sin?  Although I think that all people sin, and Christians fall squarely into that category, we can live a life that is free from the slavery that sin binds us with.  Sin is anything that takes our attention off of God.  When Peter was walking on the water toward Jesus – he let the cares of this world take his eyes off Christ (sin) caused him to sink until he looked again upon the savior and was brought out of the deep free once again.

You may feel as if you’re sinking today.  But if you have Christ on your side, you will not go under, you will not be a slave to it, it has no power against you.  This doesn’t mean you are a Super Saint and that you need to find a robe and stole to wear around so the world can see.  You will make mistakes because you are human, you are currently a spiritual being of great importance because you are loved by God, but you are living in a physical body that is corruptible and vulnerable to temptation and failure.  As long as we have not escaped this body of sin, this flesh, we have not totally escaped from Sin. But those who know Jesus are still free from it – free from the penalty, and free from the slavery to it.  You may stumble but you will not fall.  You may be persecuted and tried but you will not be destroyed.  “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Prayer: God that sets us free,

Thank you for sending your son Jesus Christ to die on the cross and pay the penalty of sin for us.  Thank you for setting us free from its slavery and making its power null and void against us.  Forgive us when we fall to temptations and deliver us from the weakness of our flesh.

Love Michael
