Scripture: John 4:
31Meanwhile his disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat something."
32But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."
33Then his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?"
34"My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
Observation: Living a life of service to God and fulfilling your purpose is sustaining food for your soul.
Application: Jesus was starting his ministry, he was working, he was following the plan and walking the path that God sent him for. His disciples noticed that He hadn’t eaten and tried to give him some food, but He said “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” In true disciple form these guys proved Jesus right when they asked each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
No Jesus wasn’t hiding cookies from the wedding banquet, he was talking about the food for the soul that he was devouring with every new step along the path of purpose that God had given Him. Jesus was content because His soul was filled. He wasn’t talking about physical food, He was full of the New Wine, the Living Water, the Bread of Life and He didn’t need anything else.
Most of us never let a day go by when we totally forget to eat. We might occasionally miss a meal or two if something drastic is happening, but we rarely go very long before we realize that we need something to sustain our bodies. At the same time however; we constantly neglect the sustenance that our souls crave so desperately. Some have let their purpose and mission starve from neglect to the point that it needs more than a random act of kindness, or an extra dollar or two in the collection plate to bring it back to life. We need a resurrection of the soul. We need to listen to that inner voice that is calling us to serve others and love one another, for in doing so we serve God and fulfill our purpose.
I don’t have any hidden cookies to give you today – just a reminder that it may be time to find some SOUL food. What is it that God wants you to do today? Do it! Don’t second guess, don’t put it off, do it now! There are many opportunities that we allow to pass by us that only come once in life. Listen. Is God trying to tell you something?
"I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow human being let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again."
– Stephen Grellet, 1773-1855 (French-born Quaker Minister)
Prayer: God of Opportunities,
Grant me the wisdom to know where you are leading me, the courage to go boldly down the path, and the heart to not turn back.
