Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:
1 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere human beings?
Observation: Growing up physically and growing up spiritually are two very different things.
Application: I remember a preacher at my home church one time telling us that although he was a full grown man physically, that he was still growing and maturing in Christ and that he was only a teenager when it came to his Christian life. I think that even though he might have only been a Christian long enough to say that he was a teenager in Christ – that this man had wisdom beyond his born again years simply because he recognized the fact that he was still learning and maturing.
When a person thinks they have it all figured out, you better watch out, that person can be dangerous spiritually. It’s the seekers that I learn the most from, those whose minds remain open and they are looking for more wisdom and understanding as they travel along in their journey.
Paul told the Christians at Corinth that they were still mere infants. Why? Because they were still jealous of each other and they were quarreling and couldn’t get along with one another. Hmm, correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t this sound like some of our modern day Churches? We need to get past our differences and dwell on what we know is true and good and right. Rather than arguing with each other, how about getting along with each other, being longsuffering and kind, tenderhearted and tolerant, respectful and helpful. Only when we can do this can we go past the spiritual milk, and partake of the heavenly meat that we so desire.
Even when meat is given to an infant, they can not digest it, they can’t take it in. It’s time to grow up Church – and the only way to grow is to grow in Love!
Prayer: Father Almighty,
Help us as The Church to grow in love for one another and love and obedience to you. Help us to mature past the level of spiritual milk and take in the meat which is the real substance, the real truth and knowledge that you you would have us to understand. Mature us God and teach us more!
