Dwelling In Unity

Scripture: Psalm 133

A song of ascents. Of David.

1 How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!

2 It is like precious oil poured on the head,
       running down on the beard,
       running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.

3 It is as if the dew of Hermon
       were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the LORD bestows his blessing,
       even life forevermore.

Observation: There are many things that God’s people do not agree on, but we can be more effective as a Christian Family if we focus on the things we do agree on.

Application:  So many things separate us as Christians today, there are issues that we disagree on, there are different interpretations of scripture, and there are many different doctrines that are not shared by all. These things pull us apart and separate us from one another making up the different denominations and even splitting congregations and families.

However there are some things that I think most every Christian can agree on.

1. God loves us.

2. God sent Jesus to pay the penalty for our sins on the cross.

3. God wants us to repent of our sins and follow Christ’s examples for us.

4. We can pray in faith to God and He will hear us and respond.

I think these are some very foundational statements that just about any Christian could agree with.  Why can’t we focus more on these things? Why can’t we be more about celebrating our likenesses, rather than arguing over our differences?  If we would spend more time trying to figure out how we can agree, how we can be on the same page, how we can work together, I think we would see a new age in the modern church and we would experience something like our scripture for today speaks of.  A time of blessing, a time of refreshment, a soothing of the soul would be ours if we would dwell together in unity rather than striking out at each other all the time in anger and frustration.

Prayer: Father Almighty,

My soul thirsts for the dew that descends upon those who dwell together in unity.  Help us, Your People, to come together as Your Children who love You and are Loved by You, and teach us how to experience your love and grace together.

Love Michael
