Scripture: Luke 20:
41 Then Jesus said to them, "Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David? 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:
" ‘The Lord said to my Lord:
"Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet." ‘ [c]
44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?"
Observation: The roles and labels we place on each other in this life are often very different in the eyes of God.
Application: We have a saying that is very wise "Don’t judge a book by it’s cover" but this is often not heeded in our society. It means when we look at someone we shouldn’t make a determination on who they are by how they present themselves physically. I think we are all guilty of doing this at least to some degree. I know I am guilty of it more than I would like to admit even to myself. Even if I don’t voice my opinion publicly, inside I am often guilty of looking at someone and prejudging their character.
Jesus is giving some divine wisdom in Luke 20 about this kind of thing. He had already referenced the Old Testament and said that the stone which was rejected had become the chief cornerstone. He was referencing himself, but at the same time he was pointing out that it is often those who we think of as useless who become the very ones that we need the most. He had also spoken earlier in the chapter of how the relationships that we have here in this world and the roles that we assign to one another are not the same as they are in the spiritual. 34 Jesus replied, "The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection. Here in v 41-44 He ties it all together. The world says that the messiah will be the son of David, but even David knew that this descendent of his would be greater than himself and called him "Lord."
Think about this… The person who you see as dependent upon you, the one that you see as a lower social class or a less able person, a less intelligent, or less understanding person, a person of less grace or mercy or compassion may be playing a role here in this world that is very different from who they are in the eyes of God. Perhaps they are what they are so that they may help you in some way that you don’t understand. We are of more value to God, and have deeper purpose in His eyes than we will ever be credited with here or that we will ever understand in this life.
Jesus taught that we should love one another no matter what our social, political, or religious status is. We are ALL of great value to God.
Prayer: God of All creation,
Thank you for the hidden value and deeper purpose in every life which I come in contact with. Help me to appreciate and revere each person as a holy creation of Your hands. Help me to treat each person, each animal, each part of nature as sacred and special and hold in highest regard all things which you have chosen to bring into the world, knowing that they are but a reflection of a much richer and fuller expression of your love which awaits us on the other side of this life.
