Baptized With Fire

Scripture: Luke 3:

16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with [b] water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with [c] the Holy Spirit and fire.

Observation: Being baptized with the fire of the spirit of God is a serious life changing thing that can not be taken lightly.  This most powerful of experiences would not change your outlook one day and leave you back where you were before the next.

Application: Why do you think that being filled with God’s spirit is spoken of by John as being baptized with fire?  Think about that image for a few moments, being engulfed in fire is not generally considered a good thing.  Fire burns, it hurts, it destroys but at the same time it purifies and cleanses in a way that is much more powerful than the water ever can.

So John says, yes I’m baptizing you with water, but there is a much more powerful baptism than mine that is coming through Jesus.  When He arrives, you will be purified through His blood as if you were baptized in a fire.

I don’t know what you may be facing, but could it be the fire of God that is purifying your life?  It may not be something that is easy to endure, fire is relentless and complete in its hunger, but in the end God will have accomplished His purposes for you.  If you trust in Jesus, if you accept Him, then you must be willing to be cleansed in the Fire of the Spirit of God.  Are you ready to be baptized with fire?

Prayer: Father,

Thank you for the intensity that is in Your Spirit.  You are a consuming fire that can not be quenched and which drives away all the unnecessary and unimportant parts of me.  Cleanse me in the fire of Your Spirit that I may be pure in intention and heart and so I may serve you fully in my life.

Love Michael
