Scripture: Ezekiel 18:
21 "But if the wicked turn away from all the sins they have committed and keep all my decrees and do what is just and right, they will surely live; they will not die. 22 None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live. 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?
24 "But if the righteous turn from their righteousness and commit sin and do the same detestable things the wicked do, will they live? None of the righteous things they have done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.
Observation: Its not important what you’ve done in the past whether good or bad, the important thing is whether you’re living for God today.
Application: I have known people who felt that they were beyond God’s salvation because of the life they had lived in the past. They think God could never forgive them. But God is anxious and ready to forgive if we turn from our ways and follow Him. The important thing is not what we have done, it’s what we are doing now. The scriptures are full of people who failed miserably but then turned around and changed their lives and listened to God and when they do so, they find God accepts them and welcomes them.
Other people feel that they have worked hard for God all of their lives and that its now time for them to rest and let others carry out God’s work. This is also failing to follow God. Our work here is never done, and God will not leave us here with nothing left to do for Him.
Whether I have been a terrible person in the past, or whether I’ve walked the straight path all my life is irrelevant to this moment and time. The question of "How is it with your soul?" is a question that we must ask ourselves every day and in every moment. It’s never too late to turn around, and we have never done enough that we can say we are done.
Prayer: Father of this moment,
Help me to realize that I am constantly being called to do your work. Help me to never turn away and keep me focused on what you want me to do. When I fall short and fail in my work, forgive me and get me back on the right track.
