Scripture: John 16:
1 "All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the hour is coming when those who kill you will think they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
Observation: God’s Spirit reveals truth to our hearts when we seek Him.
Application: The disciples of Christ had a rough road ahead of them. In this chapter Jesus warns them that even the people of faith will banish them from their synagogues and seek to destroy them, thinking that in so doing they are performing a service to God by killing them. At this point the disciples probably didn’t realize that the same people which Jesus was warning them about would be the ones who would soon send Him to the cross.
The message of Christ was so different from that which the Jewish people had been taught, it was an entirely new concept for them and most of them could not accept it. Before we judge those people too harshly I think it’s important for us to recognize that we are also resistant to change. Some of the biggest problems I’ve seen pastors have when they come into a new congregation is in trying to change things. Usually when a pastor tries to introduce change and stir things up too much or too quickly, they don’t get to stay around very long. We have firmly established our system, we stand strong on our traditions, we hold on to what our ancestors taught us and anyone who tries to break that down is seen as an enemy of the Church. How do we react when a new concept of relating to God is introduced? Do we feel that we are doing a service to God when we destroy it?
There is truth available to us through The Spirit of God, He has not closed the windows of Heaven, there are blessings we have yet to receive because we are not willing to change. Jesus tells his disciples further in the chapter that after He is gone, He will send The Spirit who will give them more truth.
12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
I believe that the Spirit of Truth is still available to us today and that God is still trying to bring us into a closer relationship with Him through a deeper understanding. It is up to us as to which side of the fence we choose to sit on. Will we be on the side that fights every new idea and casts it aside, or will we be open and willing to allow God’s Spirit of Truth to speak to us in a new way?
Prayer: God of Truth,
Thank you for Your Spirit which is still speaking to open hearts today. Forgive me when I allow my own pride and arrogance to block a true teaching that you are trying to bless me with. Help me to open my heart and help me to understand when You are truly speaking to me.
