Scripture: John 4:
23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."
Observation: The truest form of worship is that which comes from within you, words can not speak it, and actions can not portray the depth of it, but God adores it.
Application: What does Jesus mean when He says “true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth”, and how are we to do that? First we need to realize that the physical place of worship is unimportant. I can worship at any time and anywhere. I don’t know how many people have told me this as an excuse to not attend church. “I don’t have to be at church to worship God,” they will say. And that’s true, but the problem is that for most people when they don’t go, they don’t worship. On the other hand, there are many people who do go to church, but still don’t worship. They attend a worship service, but they fail to actively worship God while they are at the service. If we would truly worship outside of the church building, then something amazing would happen – church would become something that is not a place, but rather it would become a people who are loving God and each other and truly worshiping Him as He desires. I’m not saying not to go to church – Jesus often went to the temple, but just realize that the church is not the only place, and shouldn’t even be the most frequent place of your worship life. Worship God in all places, and in all things! This is what Jesus meant when He spoke of worshiping in the Spirit.
Next we need to drop all of our agendas and hang ups associated with our normal life in the church. Will I be able to get the board to vote for the new carpet in the nursery? Will the choir sing one of those songs that I don’t know the words to again? Why does that young couple keep coming to church and acting like they love God when everyone knows they’re not married and living together? You see – all these things keep us from truly worshiping God, they are like barricades in the way and we can’t cross over them, we have to tear them down and let them go. Agape’ Love (The God kind of Love) is the ONLY tool that we can use to get rid of those obstacles in our worship. This is what Jesus meant when he spoke of worshiping in truth.
Prayer: Spirit of God,
I thank you for who you are and for allowing me the opportunities to experience your life in every place, and in every part of creation. Help me to rid myself of the obstacles in my life that keep me from true and sincere worship, and guide me into a spiritual adoration and worship of you with everything that I do, and in every breath that I take.
