Scripture: James 4:
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Observation: You can not get close to God without submitting to His authority in your life, and you can not get the devil out of your life until you resist his authority.
Application: Submit to God and seek Him, and resist the devil. It seems like very easy instructions, its straight forward and simple, but all too many people are doing just the opposite. How many people out there today are submitting to temptation and living a life of self centeredness, and at the same time resisting God, resisting His instructions, His commandments, and The Saving Power of His Son? Of course that is a rhetorical question, but if we were to really think about it, the numbers would be staggering I imagine.
But its not only people who are outside of the faith who live like this, people within the faith, people of God – believers often live their lives in submission to the temptations of the devil, and in resistance to God. No one is perfect, and we all fall short and succumb to temptation from time to time, but unless we RESIST the devil, he will never flee. As long as we succumb to temptation, then seemingly irresistible temptation will always be there.
This scripture from James seems to me to be about true repentance. As we change the direction of our lives we should submit to God and seek Him, and resist the devil.
Prayer: Lord God Almighty Jehovah,
Thank you for your love and grace, and thank you for moving swiftly toward me when I seek you. Help me to resist temptation and submit to your authority in my life. Help me to live a holy and pure life so that I may serve you fully in all that I do. And Heavenly Father, please forgive me when I fall to the temptation of the devil and place my feet back on the path of righteousness and obedience to you.
