Scripture: 2 Cor. 6:1 As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. 2 For he says,
“In the time of my favor I heard you,
and in the day of salvation I helped you.” [a]
I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.
Observation: We are living in the age of God’s favor. But there is a coming day of God’s wrath and judgement.
Application: Paul believed that he was living in the very last days before the return of Christ, I think that he fully expected to see Christ return during his earthly life. This is probably why Paul refrained from marriage and felt so passionate about spreading the gospel. Had he thought that Christ might delay for a few thousand years, he might not have felt the urgency to establish all the churches that he did, or write all the letters that he wrote. I think a lot of what Paul did stemmed from this sense of urgency that he had, and I praise God for placing it in his heart. We need more of that urgency today.
It has been said that when you say to a new Christian “Jesus is comming!” they look up! But when you say the same thing to an older Christian, they want to discuss theology. We need to cultivate that upward look, that real expectation of seeing Jesus riding toward us on that white horse with “King of Kings and Lord of Lords” written on his thigh, coming not as the lamb of God as he once has, but this time as the Lion of the tribe of Judah in power and glory and majesty!
Do you believe that? Are we still looking for Christ’s return? I have to say that I don’t know if we’re going to see Jesus come back during our lifetime or not. I do believe that it could happen any time now, very soon. I believe that everything is set or being set into place now for the Biblical prophecies concerning the time of the second coming to be fulfilled. So yes I do believe we need to be looking up when we hear someone say “Jesus is coming.”
However, what we have to understand and what we have to get everyone else to understand is that we have to receive God’s grace during the days of His favor. If we wait until the days of His wrath, it will be everlasting too late, our time of making a decision based on faith and love will be over. If Jesus were to return within our lifetime then the days of God’s favor would be over and the days of His wrath would begin. But even if He doesn’t return during our lifetime, it is only during this time that we are able to make a move toward God to accept His grace for us. If we don’t do it now, we can’t do it once the days of God’s favor have ended, and if we die in our sins, then the next time we open our eyes we will be in the days of God’s wrath.
I have been guilty in the past of trying to lead people to Jesus so that they would have a better life, more abundantly blessed, more fulfilled, more uplifted. People who see Jesus in this way sometimes say, “I don’t need that crutch to make me feel better about life.” And you know what, I agree. We don’t need a crutch to make us feel better, what we need is a parachute to save us from destruction because spiritually, we are falling fast and the ground is racing toward us. You don’t put on a parachute to make your flight more comfortable or more enjoyable, you put it on to save you from death. Here is a link that says that in a much better way than I can. Why Not Preach Jesus gives Happiness, Peace, Joy
We have to seek God now while we are in the age of grace, the days of His favor, because even if Christ doesn’t come for another two thousand years, you and I could be in eternity tonight. We are never promised another day and every single day another 150,000 of us leave this life and go on to the next. God has created us as immortal beings in a mortal body, our soul will live on, it’s the condition of that life that we need to be concerned about. There is nothing more important than your eternal salvation. Nothing more important than the question, “If you were to die tonight, would you go to Heaven?”
Prayer: Heavenly Father,
Help us to realize that our time on earth is fleeting, and that there will come a day that we will each stand before you and give an account of our lives. Help me dear God to live my life here for you, so that living or dieing my life is in you and for you. Bless each person who reads these words, may their hearts be touched and their spirits set on fire through an infusing of Your own Spirit and may we all reach out to those who need you the most in our lives and help them to understand your love, grace and mercy, but also your righteous holy justice. Thank you Lord for granting us the days of your favor!
Yield: I yield my desire to try to make everyone feel more comfortable when talking about God – and lean on Your Spirit Lord to do Your work in the hearts you are preparing.
