Scripture: 2 Cor 4: 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Observation: Our temporary troubles in this life are preparing us for an eternal life of joy and fellowship with The Father.
Application: When we start thinking on the scale of eternity, nothing that we face in this short life will diminish our joy when we are united with God. The pains and sorrows we have here will seem insignificant to us after the ages have passed and we are basking in the Glory of The Lord.
My wife shared a wonderful illustration with the children of the church a month or so ago. First she had two children hold up a shoestring, one on each end, and she talked about how it seemed like it was a fairly long shoestring. Then she brought out a ball of yarn and gave one end to a child, and started unraveling it. Soon she needed another child to hold the yarn, but there was still a lot more yarn to unravel, so she kept going, she added another child, and another. Before long the yarn was unravelled all around the front of the church and there were several children involved in holding it up, and even after all that, there was still more yarn yet left unraveled. She told them, think of our lives as this shoe string. We are born, we live a while and our bodies die, but we go on living like this yarn, and we will never ever die. Even though at first the shoe string looked very long, now when we look at the yarn, we see that it doesn’t seem that long anymore.
I know that when we are facing times of hardship or pain it seems that time has stopped and that we will never be able to overcome our problems. Jesus said that as long as we were in this world we were going to have trouble, hardships, trials and temptations, but that in spite of all this we should be happy and our joy should be full because He has overcome the world. If we have Jesus within, the pressures and problems of the world without are never able to defeat us and we can be sure that one day we will be comforted and blessed beyond measure.
So my friends, do not lose heart – weeping may endure for a night, but Joy comes in the morning, and it’s almost dawn!
Prayer: Sovereign God,
I pray for all my friends who are hurting, who are facing trials and who feel that they will never get through their pain. I ask that you send your comfort and strength upon them and that you will wrap your arms around them and carry them safely through their valleys. Father heal those who are sick, deliver those who are bound, set free the ones who have become imprisoned by their sorrow. I claim victory in the lives of those who are crying out to you now, I agree in faith that Your will shall be accomplished, and your name will be glorified by the miraculous manifestations of your grace. Thank you Father for the resolutions, for the healing, for the steadfast assurance that is being accomplished right now. Because we together now claim it in faith through Jesus Christ Your Son, Our Lord! Amen, Amen.
Yield: When I feel that I can’t go on – I yield my temporary pain for the eternal work of God.
