Scripture Acts 13
26 “Brothers and sisters from the children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people.
If we aren’t careful, we can get so wrapped up in religion that we (like the Jewish people and leaders who condemned Christ) forget the relationship.
The people of Jesus’ day who led the worship, and read the scriptures, and knew the prophecies were (Im sure) sincere and honest in thier faith, but they had allowed their traditions and rituals to blind them to the truth of God that was moving among them. They were so oblivious to what was happening that they unwittingly played a part in the Crucifixion of the Messiah which they had read about, and hoped for, all of their lives.
We are not immune to this ourselves. If we don’t keep a close watch on spiritual lives we to can get so caught up in the chapters and verses, that we miss the message of grace and love that is within them.
If we get too wrapped up in our services and our schedules, we may miss The Holy Spirit that’s walking right beside us – whispering in our ears.
We can worry too much about the amount that is in the collection plate, and not enough about how many hungry people we are feeding, how many sick we are ministering to, how many lost we are reaching out for.
Father open my spiritual eyes, and make me aware of your presence in my life as I walk through this world. Help me walk by faith – not by sight, help me to sense Your presence in every aspect of your creation. And let me not miss any opportunity that you lay before me to serve honor and worship you.
I turn over my schedule, plans, rituals and understandings, and yield to Your will and desire for me this day.
